FSA Photo of the Week

Something a little more timeless?

This is a hard photograph to take. It's definitely a case of "hey, a cool thing" and usually those turn out to be awful photographs of, admittedly, a cool thing. This one manages it, I think, because the photographer was able to eliminate so much clutter. He retains the simple graphical rail, places the "cool thing" pretty well in the frame, and leaves it at that.

This is definitely a case of there being a photograph there to be had and the photographer seeing that fact, rather than any great work on the part of the photographer. Pure "seeing," if you will.

Sign on rail, Las Cruces, New Mexico. Shot by Russell Lee, August 1939. This could be from practically any era, though, I feel.
